Minch on Personal Resilience
by David Minchin
So, the word resilience comes from the Latin word RESILIRE… to bounce back.
or rebound. Resilience refers to an inner strength It’s not a trait that we have or we don’t have, resilience can be learnt and built with time and experience.
The topic interests me because this quality called resilience, is often required in the world of work, but even more so in life generally. Anyone who hasn’t suffered any stressful times in their life is a very, very lucky person. There are many aspects and events in our lives when we may need to draw on our resilience.
So if while you are reading this you’re thinking, do you know what? I am resilient! What is it that makes you feel resilient?
Now maybe you are a person that doesn’t feel very resilient… So what can you do?
I came across a great self-assessment tool which is produced by Persolog an International academy and publishing house, you just complete a straightforward questionnaire and a resilience profile is produced for you.
After a great deal of research, Persolog came up with four main areas of resilience. They are Accepting, Feeling, Gaining Orientation and Understanding.
Now, sitting under these are 10 factors which I’ll go into in a future episode, which I have called “Resilience 2”
I think the questionnaire is a great way of getting a starting point.
Sometimes we don’t know that we actually have more resilience than we think because it’s not an everyday word, is it? Not used a lot in our conversations or our thoughts.
You may be a person who isn’t keen on questionnaires then just have a listen to my next Podcast episode “Resilience 2” and feel free to ask any questions.
In the meantime, perhaps try thinking about a time in the past when you needed to have internal strength to deal with something. How did you feel? What did you do? Maybe write down a few notes. Did you surprise yourself when this internal strength appeared?
Or, if you prefer, you could do the same thing about how someone you have known who showed inner strength when dealing with something? Write down what they said and what they did.
It’s amazing, what we can learn from our experiences. So if you would like to know more about this topic please listen to MINCH on Resilience 2.
